Hotels and visitor infrastructure grew accordingly and up to 90,000 would visit the town each year. During this period the middle classes in Margate grew as many previously working class were regrouped as lower middle class. Restaurateurs, Clerks, Hotel and Guest House owners, Publicans, Carriers and Bathing Machine owners were elevated. Margate thrived and between 1803 and 1890 three Pleasure Gardens were opened. This included Lord George Sanger’s Hall by the Sea.
